I did initially buy fully into Arlo ecosystem because (as long as you have the hub) they supported HomeKit. But when I got around to getting this indoor camera I suddenly realised, that for no apparent reason it does not support HomeKit at all even with their latest hub. I also realised that none of them support HomeKit secure video either. So I've ended up returning all their products and going with other brands which do for less money and no monthly subscriptions.

I have been a fan of Arlo cameras for a number of years and recently upgraded my wireless outdoor cameras. As usual with Arlo the set up worked perfectly and I have been very pleased with them. I decided to also upgrade two indoor, wired cameras to the new 'Essential' version...but ran into significant issues trying to set them up.

The cameras come with VERY brief instructions - the set up process is carried out through the Arlo app on smartphone. I set several hours trying to get this to work without success. I lost count of the number of times I restored the cameras to factory settings and tried again. It was very frustrating. I decided to consult the internet and search for possible solutions, and eventually (in the online detailed manual for the cameras which is not easy to find) I realised what the problem was. Most home wifi networks operate on two frequencies 2.4 and 5GHz, and many smartphones automatically select 5GHz. However the Arlo Indoor Essential camera only operates on 2.4 GHz and, to enable you to set it up, your mobile device has to be working on the same frequency. Its actually quite difficult to force a smartphone to select one particular frequency (certainly on the latest iPhone this selection process is done automatically with no user override). The only other solution is to go into the settings of your wireless router and temporarily disable the 5GHz network. This whole process seemed far to complicated and fraught with problems. So, sadly, I gave up and have returned the cameras. I think there should be a mention of this issue in the description on retailer websites, and the 'Quick Start Up Guide' should also mention this along with detailed instructions for someone without detailed technical knowledge of wifi networks. A much better solution would be to improveme the design of these indoor cameras to allow them to operate on both frequencies.

Habitué a arlo je change d’installation et mets cette camera d’interieur a la base super content qualité facilité de montage et d’installation le top un filtre de confidentialité ce baisse quand elle est en mode desactivé je me dis top et depuis une fois sur deux jour elle est en hors ligne avec impossibilité de la remettre sans la supprimer et la réinstaller aussi le filtre est lever avec la lumiere rouge genre elle film je regarde camera desactivé puis hors ligne avec impossibilité de faire quoi que ce soit elle est pas loin de la boxe internet et est co en mode tres bonne réception c’est vraiment pas rassurant bref je la mets de coté pour quand je pars en vacance mais un peut décu

Arlo do have a reputation for very high spec. outdoor security cameras, and what they appear to have done here is to use that brand recognition to add value to what's really a very mediocre static, 1080hp indoor camera.

On the positive side, this does work with Arlo's software, which is much simpler and more reliable to set up on your phone than that offered by generic manufacturers.

On the negative side, unless you pay a monthly fee, the only thing this camera offers that cameras a quarter of the price do is a motion-detection or manually operated siren and a 'privacy' feature that slides a cap over the lens, but then there are many cameras that offer these features at less than half the price of this one.

What's particularly galling is that it actually does have some very useful features. - excluding pets from the motion sensing, etc, but you can only access these features if you're willing to pay a few extra quid a month, which you'll also need to pay if you want access to the cameras' footage.

If you do think a hefty premium and basically, renting software you already own for 40 pounds a year is worthwhile for these extra features, It is a good quality but quite outdated low-resolution indoor security camera. But I can't recommend it.

Picked this up because I recently moved house and had a potential blind spot on the property that I wanted to cover.

The camera is very easy to set up and connect into my Wi-Fi. You need to put it somewhere you can keep it connected into mains power, which was not an issue in my case but something you need to be aware of as not every location will be near a plug socket.

I liked the fact that there’s a little shutter you can put over the camera so that you can retain your privacy (although for where I needed to keep it, this was not a big concern). The image quality was good (including night vision) and it comes with an alarm that you can activate if someone does look like they’re breaking in (the alarm is very loud). I tried the two way communication and that seemed to work fine too.

The camera comes with free 90 day access to the secure plan, which is useful because otherwise you can only monitor images live - there’s no storage capacity. The secure plan gives you up to 30 days of on-line storage to keep images if you need too. After 90 days the cost (at the time of this review) of the plan is £2.79 per month per camera.

Given that the camera itself is a hefty £113.99 at the time of review, I thought that the extra cost was too much, especially for only 30 days storage. I did not take up the plan after the 90 day period and am just using it for live monitoring, which is fine is as much as I’ll get a head’s up if someone does try to access my house via the notifications but also means I won’t have any evidence of the culprit.

On that basis, I think this is okay but I can’t say I’d rush to recommend it to friends/family.

Though Arlo are a well-known brand in the security camera , I wasn't overly impressed with this camera.
The main reason being the quality of the image produced. For the price and brand reputation, I expected the quality to be much better but instead, my cheaper home security camera are capable of producing a better quality image.

Much like other security cameras, you can connect your phone to the app to watch the feed live. This was actually quite easy to do with one minor annoyance - it only connects to the 2.4GHz network like most security cameras I've owned so I ended up having to split the network to get it to work.
The app does have a lot of useful features but you have to join a subscription plan to access them.

Another thing that I didn't like was the motion detection notifications. This seems to be an occurrence with most security cameras where they'll send notifications even if there's nobody in the room. I had hoped that this Arlo camera would do a better job but it seems this is just as sensitive as others - it sends notifications for small shadows moving around based on lights coming in from outside.

There is also a 10% voucher available at the time of this review, which expires towards the end of September 2021.

Overall, it's okay but due to the lower than expected image quality, it's not something I would personally want to rely on. At its current price of £89.99, I can purchase several cheaper ones and connect them in various locations around my house for added security rather than just have this one single camera.

It was the Arlo's bad luck that a couple of days before I got this, I set up a TP-Link indoor camera that I'd just got at 1/6th of the price. It was dead easy to set up and I can pan and tilt it from my phone etc. Job done in minutes.
This, being much more expensive, I assumed would be somehow better. Setting it up took quite a while longer - it just wasn't as smooth and some steps had to be repeated. Putting it in place was more hassle as, although it's got a wider view, it's got to be manually twisted and turned. And it's very light and easy to knock out of position, so it really does need mounting somewhere, which I didn't want to do. And then being asked for £7 every month after just 3 months was the final nail.
However, I would say the picture changes if you're invested in an Arlo system already. There are definitely some good points about the camera.. It's quick and easy to set up 'zones' where it won't trigger an alert and they seem to work well. It has a privacy shield that you can easily close - and there's nothing like a physical barrier to stop it spying on you. It has a wide angle view, so easily covers a room. And, if mounted so it can't be knocked, it's pretty much fit and forget. The alerts are reliable and work well, and it can distinguish between animals and people pretty well (once you tell it to ignore animals, which took me a while to find). And I imagine (but don't know) that if you've got a lot of Arlo stuff, they don't add £7 for every single device. So the balance changes. If you have Arlo, I've found this camera reliable and easy to use.
If you want one or two cameras in a room, there are cheaper and easier options. I infinitely prefer my TP-Link's ability to scan around the room as I wish with a less distorted picture. And I routinely just unplug it when I get home. Of course, the Arlo wins here - if I forget to plug mine in, bad luck. But with the Arlo you can remember you forgot to open the privacy shutter when you left and do it from anywhere. So much depends on your own needs/wishes for a security system.

The reason I'm giving this a three is due to the limitations with the camera and I'm not in anyway happy about privacy. The camera itself is fine, looks nice and preformed ok but it's way too limited for my linking.

Firstly you have to create an account, you then have to sync the camera to your WiFi, so far sounds ok... But then you're met with a three month free trial and have to accept before you can access the camera. I assumed I could use this as a stand alone for viewing by my network but instead it's locked to only viewing by Arlo app or http log in.

Secondly, This is where it gets a bit iffy for me, I had push notifications turned on and literally any movement forced one onto my screen. Sounds great yer? This means it wouldn't be suitable for indoor use or a high traffic area. Through this I was able to see on the web login that there was recordings. It saves completely to their base servers.

Thirdly, with saving to their servers I want to know who can access this information. Literally every movement is recorded. For some this may seem fine but for me it's a bit no. It's only when it's detected but still it's stored online. I would like the recordings to be saved to my DVR or PC or the ability to record live viewing. I don't want some company who have my email, after the trial would have my card details and also my IP address, storing my videos solely. I want to have access without needing to log in.

Fourth, I have CCTV on my property. I have four cameras linked by BNC and one IP camera. I can view and playback anywhere in the world through my DVR. Other cameras allow you to do this so why doesn't this?

Fifth, I found live viewing slow and sluggish. Recordings were fine but this tells me that you'd be better viewing an event after its happened. If you tried to view at the same time it's recording something it would probably be low quality. Also what's with 2.4ghz for connecting? The weakest frequency range and really overcrowded.

Sixth, it's locked. You can't add it to anything, you can't access to use as a webcam, you can't add to a DVR or use static via WiFi and camera software. On my other cameras I use Gdmss Plus. This allows me to access, record, take screen shots, talk back, push notifications. Also you can't turn them all off, so you'll be inundated with constant notifications. You have to pick at least one notification!

Seventh, if you were using this outside, you're going to want it at a height. The wiring would have to go through the wall or into a junction box with a socket. You're either going to need a plug socket up high or extension lead. The rear isn't protected, it's like a phone power connection. No weather proofing whatsoever. You're either going to get water into it or someone can unplug if it's at lower height.

Last but not least, I could see data streaming from my router to Ireland when it was on. Not just when something happened. What was that data? There was no recordings? Soon as I deactivated and unplugged my tracing results flatlined. If you're on a data package that has fair usage policy you're going to go over this and I repeat WHAT WAS THAT DATA?

As a round up; if you're needing a camera and don't want the hassle of installing CCTV with DVR storage then it maybe for you but for me it's a no. I really wish it wasn't locked and impenetrable, it looks nice and I would have happily used it as an IP camera but it's too limited.

 As I have already got several Arlo cameras, when this one came up it made sense to go for it, as I have a couple of areas in my home where I still want to have some cameras. In the box you get the camera, with stand, wall mount, charging cable, plug and instructions.

As I have these already, it only took me a couple of minutes to add this to my existing ones on the Arlo app. Camera quality if good, both video and still and the night-time performance is also up to spec. With the App, you can set movement zones, if you want to track a particular area in your house. You can also exclude pets.

Despite this coming with a 2m cable, it is too short if you want to mount it on a wall. I currently have mine sitting on top of a 6ft glass cabinet and the cable is barely long enough for that. This means I am going to have to buy a longer cable for it. If mounting on a low unit or something, then this is not going to be an issue.

Apart from the cable length issue, the only other issue I have is with the price. When you consider you can now get cameras, with pretty much the same functionality as this one, for about a quarter of the price, it does make this one look awfully expensive for what it is.
