Poor quality finish will rip your hands up

Ordered two different kettlebells. Both were finished poorly and had sharp metal protrusions on the hand grip rendering the item useless unless you want to wreck your hands.

Decent VFM item that could have been better finished

Review of Amazon Basics kettlebell [ABKB] 20kg. I already had Basics KBs in 8, 12 & 16 Kg and wanted the 20. I pounced when the price dropped to just £35.67 - which as other reviewers have suggested, is amazing VFM for a big KB. The 20 arrived promptly in a well-sealed box, which was battered from its journey (the delivery guy struggled with the compact but very heavy package). An inner box contained the KB, which was pristine with no seams on the handle (a seam can damage your hands, especially when it's on the top or bottom of the handle).

The 20's handle was 12.5cm in circumference at centre (the 16kg is 11cm and the 12 is 10.5cm).

The 20kg's inner handle width was 14.5cm against the 16's 13cm and the 12's, er 12cm. So plenty big enough for 2-handed swings with my very large hands.

I checked the actual weight of the 20 on reliable scales and it was 20.2kg, so no complaint there. I reckon the 0.2 excess was accounted for by the paint, which is the same thick and very dimpled Hammerite-type black that adorns my other KBs.

When the KB handle rotates in your grip that paint finish can hold on to the skin of your palms and fingers - the resulting pulling under load is uncomfortable to say the least. To reduce this, you can put (messy) chalk powder on your hands before you ["ahem"] go swinging. Or a wet lubricant, although you may find the KB then escapes your grasp altogether (unpopular with the wife) as well as lube being even more messy (end suspect!).

But my preferred option is to rub the KB handles down with abrasive, for which you really need a power tool because doing this by hand is hard work. I used a multi tool with sandpaper attachment (60 grade working down to 180). A belt-sander might be better and a file might help as well. See before and after photos.

Once the glaze is off and the dimples are gone the KB handle rolls nicely in your grip (any seam that may have been on the handle will be taken care of as well). You'll still get calluses, but you won't tear your hand open.

But best way to reduce those calluses is to change your grip for swings.... Hold your kettlebell where fingers meet palm, instead of lower down your palm. Simps.

NB. If you keep the sanded KB outside it will go rusty, but you can get away with that because light rust helps the handle rotate in your grip better.

Kettlebells are generally expensive, especially the well built ones. Is this one too cheap to be legit? Well, it supplies most of what you'd need from a kettlebell for a big cut in price; it's a heavy cannonball with a handle. You can:

a) Swing it
b) Lift it

which fits all of my kettlebell criteria.

I only have a 16kg from Amazon. I would have preferred the handle to have a longer window and I can see myself filing down the smooth coating to give it more grip (pro insight: exercise makes you sweat which doesn't mix well when swinging a smooth, heavy projectile). The handle itself is of an OK width; wide enough to grip or hook with fingers, and I have small-medium juvenile hands which haven't seen physical labour beyond building a few vegetable patches. I wouldn't want anything wider.

Otherwise, kettlebells are meant to be simple and minimalist tools which this one is at a very attractive price.

The paint/laquer/finish or whatever it is is shoddy on the inside of the handle but a few minutes with a file was enough to remove the hazard (but the imperfection is still detectable when you pick it up).

Shape-wise it is a pretty standard kettlebell. Yes it will hurt your forearms in some positions but that is because it is a heavy kettlebell.

OK....these kettle bells are a great price, well balanced and comfortable to use. As some other reviewers have mentioned, there are sharp protuberances on the underside of the handle. Not wanting to send it back and risk getting another duff one, I wrapped some thick black electrical adhesive duct tape around the handle which solved the problem. I guess the quality control could be improved but then the price would probably increase. I would definitely consider sizing up in future.

all I wanted was a straightfoward kettlebell. This is exactly that, perfect for what I needed. Also the handle is a good size and caused some kettle envy at our class from at least one person who had gone for a fancier looking model but she struggled to transfer it from hand to hand. Passed the link to this one and she now has one!

prefer the silicon covered kettlebells at about the same price but these are the only ones available right now. good value but I would prefer to pay a bit more for something with s bit of extra grip on handle, in a really sweaty workout feels like they could fly out of your hand

Pros,A robust basic well made lump of iron with a handle on top. Also a good competitive price .
Cons, l find the handles on the 16 and 20 kg to be on the large side on the circumference for someone like myself with small hands .
Conclusion,Not as fancy and slick as some kettle bells l have seen at the gym or online. Basic or top notch bells we all do the same movements and the more expensive ones don't make us anymore fitter or stronger.

Only complaint is the poor finish on the inside of the handle which needed filing off. All 3 of the kettlebells I bought were similar in this regard. Good value.

This is a solid and simply designed Kettlebell. But be weary of the fact there are no rubber grips on the handle, which means if your hands start to sweat and get slippery, you could very easily fling the thing across the room. Also, if using outside, the handles can become very cold so I recommend using some gloves that grip.
