Productbeschrijving
Gabor Csupo ('Bridge to Terabithia') directs this adventure based on the classic children's novel 'The Little White Horse' by Elizabeth Goudge. Dakota Blue Richards ('The Golden Compass') plays Maria Merryweather, a 13-year-old girl who is forced to move in with Sir Benjamin (Ioan Gruffudd), the eccentric uncle she never knew she had, following the death of her father. Uprooted from her London life and transplanted to the ancestral home of Moonacre Manor, Maria finds herself in a mysterious world out of time, populated by strange characters and mythical beasts. It's not long before she discovers that there is an ancient story around the founding of the family estate that will have a profound effect on her destiny....

Suffice to say of the many, many DVD's my six year old girls possess this is by far their favourite and the one they most like to introduce friends to. The story was sufficiently engaging to make for enjoyable family viewing, and, although I can't imagine my husband watching it twice, the girls have enjoyed watching it time and time again.
The story follows a young girl, Maria Merryweather, recently orphaned after the death of her father. Suddenly homeless, and alone but for her governess, she goes to live in the otherworldly Moonacre Valley with her gruff and solitary Uncle. The film follows her discovery of the history of that magical valley and of the two families that live side by side, in opposition for generations, as well as the history of the original Moon Princess and the curse destined to destroy the valley if another Moon Princess doesn't take up her mantle and restore peace.
The acting is sufficiently solid and the film is certainly visually appealing, bright and fantastical with beautiful costumes. There is a heroine, fleeting appearances of a white unicorn and black lion, touches of romance, danger and magic. Perfect viewing for my girls; they loved it. I was entertained and found it an enjoyable watch too, although not quite with the devotion of my girls.

Unfortunately the budget is too low to convey the rich tapestry of description contained within the book. Similarly a lack of thought or simplification for the modern child mean the script is basic and hammy, which makes watching tedious. This film does not convey the intellect and human observation of The Little White Horse, nor the extent of the wonder, fear and curiosity that the protagonist feels. The film plot differs somewhat to the book, being much edited, which again serves to weaken it.
The portrayal of Sir Benjamin as being rude and huffy seemed like lazy script writing, as in the book he is far more complex. A shame for the former Hornblower. The chef was very irritating, though I'm sure he did his best. The rest of the actors also act well enough for the weak cheesey script.
For me the most original and fascinating visuals in the films were to be seen in the costumes, especially Maria's, Miss Heliotrope and the 'evil' characters (irritating chef excluded, his outfit made me feel genuinely angry).
That said, the film was designed for children, not adult escapists, and I think had I have been nine or younger I would have loved it.
