The story features all the prominent names in Roman history, Octavian, Caesar, Mark Anthony etc and depicts the time frame that roughly covers the transition from a Republic to the better known Imperial period and path that Caesar took towards power.
I can not say enough about this series, it is simply amazing and if I can find even a single fault with it, it would be that it is only 2 seasons and not the 10 seasons that we fans we have loved to have seen. That having been said, I dare anyone to try watch just one episode, I bet you can't do it!
It should be noted that, true to the depicted time, this is not for people who are easily upset by violence or sex, there is a life times worth of both throughout the series and high definition makes it all that more graphic in it's presentation.
The digital transfer to the discs is excellent resulting in a fantastic image with vivid color. The sound track is also beautifully rendered and engineered providing an immersive experience when the action comes about.
This is an excellent addition to any video library.
The sex including full frontal nudity for males, not just the more common for females, lots of orgies perhaps this was more accurate for the time, but again I am not sure about all the drug usage. (so knock off one start for that) There was certainly enough violence to keep some viewers interested. But my biggest beef was with the disks themselves! Just what kind of moron designed the menus? There is no continuity from one episode to the other. So far on all multi disk series , I could set it up to go from episode to episode automatically -- called "play all episodes!" good luck with that in this set. Off another star.
Despite all the above , it is not a bad way to spend 20 hours or so, just realize there are a lot of fiction and questionable events. Over all only 3 stars!
I watched it twice on TV years ago, now I bought the discs and watched the entire series 3 times back to back (the third time was with the commentaries turned on - very interesting), I've never done that with anything else.
Combat, friendship, game of thrones style subterfuge, the most powerful ruler in the world and his family, the aristocrats and the dirtiest and lowest of plebs (regular citizens), love and hate, good and bad all mixed together to make an epic tale of Ancient Rome.
The scenery/cinematography/costumes and general look/feel is not just movie quality but epic movie quality.
The writing is superb - believable characters with proper motivations for their actions and engaging, believable dialogue and a very compelling story/plot line.
The music is impressive, appropriate, and adds to the overall feel.
The acting is so good it doesn't seem like acting at all. While the whole cast did an amazing job, I feel that Kevin Mckidd and especially Ray Stevenson should be mentioned by name for their impressive portrayals - I don't know if they won any awards.... but they should have. They have a fantastic on screen chemistry and are my favourite movie/tv "buddies" - one minute fighting to save each other's lives and the next minute beating the hell out of each other.
Warning: if you are offended by graphic violence, full frontal nudity, or swearing then this isn't for you and the rest of us will enjoy this epic tale without you.
Sighhhhhhhh now on to the discs themselves - worst, most clunky, disc menu I have ever seen. Navigating it is like navigating the ocean during a hurricane without GPS. And no "auto go to next episode" so you have to navigate the clunkiness after every episode, however, it is more than worth it to watch this truly awesome show.
My highest recommendation 6/5 stars.
and for being a little off on the accurate side of the time, it’s off people slightly a bit.
lots of sex as well, and if you don’t like to see men parts lots of that to go with orgy of sex.
and don’t forget in that time period there’s lots of blood and killing. sometimes just because you’re you.
but the one thing I was laughing at is the guy in the times square who announce what’s going on.
I call him the internet provider. I was so laughing myself away about that. you have to see it to know.
Yeah A Historic Bland of Sorts.
