I was a bit shocked considering the reputation and respect Roku seems to have. In terms of values and ethics this is not what I'd understood I was buying.
"We may receive information..., Wi-Fi network name and connection data, and information about other devices connected to the same network."
Before they'll allow you to use your new device, and as a condition of them allowing you to use it, Roku demands full credit card or other payment authorisation, which they'll hold open online allowing them to debit what they like when they like. You are explicitly denied the security and safety net of only handing over details as and when you're happy to authorise a payment. They neither care nor cater for you if you bought this with no intention of watching paid services.
Good luck with that refund when Roku or family or visitor or imposter screws up, after forcing you to do it that way!
Finally (at least as far as I got) In order to use this new device you've just bought, you must agree to Roku's lengthy t&cs. Furthermore you must agree to agree to any future changes they may make, in order to continue using it. If you don't agree to any changes they may unilaterally make at any time they will terminate your use of your own device.
They will deliver advertising of unspecified nature and extent. The only option they allow you is whether they are personalised using the personal data they've "collected" from you, your systems and other organisations.
Impossible to trust this lot. Sadly I trusted them by default initially and now they have what they have.
I have not been able to contact Roku. They publish no email address and their website is designed to be dead to you unless you allow their scripts to run on your computer. Not a great idea given the level of spying they admit to in their "privacy" policy.
It sets up its own hidden SSID, WiFi channel camped on top of your router channel. In theory this can be turned off in the settings - Google it. However, even then, this still interferes horribly with my other WiFi devices. Pull the power out of the Roku and all is good. Plug it back in again and all sorts of things fall over, including my Harmony Remote Hub.
I have returned it and gone back to my much older Roku with an RJ45 ethernet port, which I bought to replace an earlier Roku stick with the same WiFi problems. The older Roku is now quite slow and unstable and there really isn't a Roku product available here now that is any good. The non-UK "Ultra" might do it, but is Apple TV money in the UK, so which would you buy....?
Possibly the top of the range MIMO 5GHz Roku would work a bit better, but I certainly don't want one of these things polluting my 5GHZ channels - still seems to have the same sort of problems according to the various forums.
So if you want Amazon Prime and NowTV in the same device it looks like a Smart TV (LG WebOS seems good) or an Apple TV. Roku is off my list for good until they put an RJ45 port back in and allow WiFi to be disabled.
Who on earth thinks using WiFi for streaming video on a static device is a good idea.....? Marketing guff over substance - sad really - nice product ruined by an insurmountable flaw.
