Good quality camera with POE

My main factor is choosing the wired Ring stick on cam was the ability to use POE (Power Over Ethernet), the camera is situated outside and I did not want to mess about with wifi and batteries. The camera works well and I am ver y pleased with it. I like the app, it seems well featured and various settings can be changed e.g motion detection sensitivity, Motion alerts on or off. There is a history of detected events which is easy to access. It should be noted there is a £2.50 pm cost to review/keep video from camera.
A POE injector is included in box together with screwdriver, screws and rawl plugs.

I first purchased '2 of ieGeek Security WiFi Outdoor Camera 1080P Waterproof Home Surveillance Bullet IP Cameras' and had nothing but disappointment so sent them back and purchased this 'Ring Stick Up Cam Wired HD Security Camera' and it is excellent.

My house is an 1840 build with castle-like thick walls so Wi-fi isn't great (going to get a Netgear mesh extender). At the moment I have this camera sitting inside the kitchen looking out of a closed window and I am astonished at the ease of access and quality. The only hole you need to drill when properly installing it outside is a hole large enough to take a micro USB connector for power. (The previous camera had three wires hanging off of it and you need to drill a 3/4 inch hole to get them inside.)

The download from Ring is easy and I have installed it on Windows 10 (desktop) and my Android and it works perfectly. When it arrived the documentation was poor but I downloaded the manual from the Ring website. First I was unsure that the camera would work with wifi. Images in manual were unclear on this point. WOuld have been useless to me if it didn't. So, I called their 24/7 helpline and was assured it does and indeed it does.

Picture attached is through the glass of my kitchen window - not installed it fully yet and it is brilliant.

Unboxing was interesting, serious top quality boxing. It also came with everything, even a screwdriver with security screws and driver attachment as well as a masonry drill bit. I never expected that.

I must say Ring is a serious quality company that clearly cares about their products and their customers. A real quality product.

Good build quality, decent picture and impressive box contents - I'm particularly happy with the included POE injectors.

My biggest gripe is the fact that the company don't seem to grasp the difference between simplified and simplistic, the app and control options are seriously limited considering the price of both the hardware and the subscription. I'm seriously considering returning these and investigating the Arlo cameras.

Pros
- Well made
- Well packaged - comes with everything you need (apart from a drill ;-)
- Motion is sensitive and can be adjusted
- options of Ethernet or mains power via adapter

Cons
- In order to use this fully you will need to subscribe to ring £2.50 per month per device...forever!
There is no real need for this , Ring could either have had some memory on the cam or a memory slot for users to add their own cards.
There can be a lag of up to a couple of minutes before you can see the live video - even when I'm on the wifi in the house - pretty useless if someone is at the door (I have 150Mb fiber to the house with the latest BT Hub and 4 disc extenders, so its not my internet)
Resolution could be better - can't read a licence plate at 20 feet.

I have mixed feelings about this camera.
This camera is used outdoor, connected using POE so no issues whatsoever with wifi connectivity. Motion detector works great in day time and it seems to capture a few seconds before motion was detected.
There have been a few instances that when motion is detected and you try to access the camera, it can take 20 secs or so to connect, but the recording did occur fine.

Night time though is a different story.
There is no motion detection at all when it is pitch black, irrespective how close you are to the camera. As soon as there is an outdoor light though, motion is detected fine

Upgraded the review from 3 to 5 stars.
I have been in touch with Ring suport who advice that the device night time vision could have been faulty and was replaced free of charge - the old device had to be sent back also for free.
I have been using the new device for at least 3 weeks now and night time motion detection when its pitch black is working perfectly.

I was also introduced to the Rapid Ring companion app which is stripped down version of the normal app and is used mainly for viewing and responding to notification. so far this is much more responsive when responding to a notification

The camera setup was seamless, the app is OK. I had no problems setting up, renaming and configuring the camera. As expected, there are a few things to consider when buying this camera. This is a cabled camera, you will have to get power from somewhere. You can either use the micro USB input, one of the most ubiquitous standards these days, or power over Ethernet. The latter takes power over your network cable, which pretty much eliminates all your wifi woes. This might not be a suitable option for everyone but if it is, it makes the camera a cracking device.
I have only had the camera for a few days, I will report back if it starts to annoy me in the future :)

As mentioned, the app is not perfect, then again whose camera security app is. You do not have a huge choice when it comes to camera software, usually the ones sold on amazon are from no-name Chinese manufacturers and have terrible apps, user interfaces etc. Ring is quite user friendly but needs some additional polishing and features.
- If your live view does not switch on, you have no idea what the problem is. A simple message telling you that your wifi is not perfect would go a long way. You can find your wifi strength under device health which is good.
- I wish you had the option of disconnecting and reconnecting, or preferably restarting the camera through the app. There is always a reason to restart a device and the option should never be overlooked, at least in my opinion.

SIMPLIFY CAMERA PLEASE

I am an ardent fan of Ring but I was disappointed with the new indoor/outdoor Stick Up Camera. The product maintains the outstanding Ring quality and is packed with every conceivable cable and tool that you might need to install it just about anywhere. But here in lies my concern. My intended location was indoors to monitor my dog during my absence from the home. Unlike the other Ring cameras, this camera needs a mini router, POE or Ethernet cable(s). All too complicated, intrusive cables and whatever installation you require, it will leave a number of redundant cables. That said, I currently enjoy 5 Ring devices protecting my property and they are outstanding in performance. My request would be to make an indoor camera with simple wi-fi connection and an outdoor camera with simple wi-fi. For poor wi-fi reception, offer a good quality extender or mesh system.

I'm really disappointed. The 1st unit purchased was faulty (the WiFi died after 24 hours), and because set up requires WiFi I couldn't even set the device up using an ethernet connection! Second device came quickly and worked fine (thanks to Amazon for the quick returns procedure). My main issue is that I had wanted to set the camera up as a nursery camera for when our toddler is asleep. However, LIVE VIEW IS RESTRICTED TO A MAXIMUM OF 10 MINUTES. What kind of security camera does not allow a permanent viewing connection? I assumed that this setting could be changed, however it's hard coded which is ridiculous. Needless to say, I'm extremely disappointed that this security camera cannot be used as a security camera.

Easy to install. POE great

Very easy to install. Used existing POE switch (TP link TL-SG1005P) to power it and connect data. Connects to app faster than wifi cams as connection is via Ethernet. Much better than wifi versions ( I have three other Ring cams). Picture quality is OK like other ring cams. The wide field of view is good but 1920 pixels isn’t really enough. Needs to be mounted at head height and near to the area being viewed otherwise the resolution isn’t good enough to identify faces. Night vision is quite good. Ability to trigger another ring cam from this one is useful. App works well. Motion detection works well - I can track cats and foxes all night!

I have several ring cameras, this seems to be the worst of them. Firstly the picture in daylight is good quality when it switches to night vision it looses quality and you would struggle to make out the face of a person at 5 meters. every so often the video feed stutters and takes a few seconds to update so you can see multiple images on the screen. The is a built in intercom that should allow you to talk to the person on the camera this is not usable as the audio is broken both ways. This is hardwired to a 500mb Virgin connection with the POE adaptor supplied and I don't get the same issues on the Ring doorbell or Ring spotlight camera which connect VIA wifi to the same network.
