Great camera, not so great app functionality.

The camera itself is very well built and its field of view is exceptional. In both regards it surpasses our current system (Blink). This purchase was used as a case study, should we change to Ring (already have several Ring products and paying the maximum subscription) or stay with Blink? We have seven Blink cameras (five internal, two external and two sirens). While the camera itself outperforms Blink it's let down terribly by poor software in the app. I like the ability to turn recording on and off, there's no need to record family during the day. However, there's no ability to schedule recording and unless we remember to turn on before we go to sleep we're potentially missing key events. Linked devices is another nice edition to the app but it doesn't go far enough. The siren from this little camera is anaemic to say the least (but understandable given its size) and is unlikely to deter any criminal - especially with double-glazing. Linked device preferences need to be expanded to turn-on ALL sirens if a single siren is activated. Ability to turn-on lights or record on other devices isn't particularly helpful unless there's movement, at which point other cameras will record anyway. At the moment, while a nice edition, linked device settings are rather deficient in their capabilities. Another frustration, there's nothing that really ties the system together harmoniously. I'm concerned about investing in another camera if I cannot get them to work (on a schedule) together. I don't want to individually turn-on every camera every night and if we are away from home and unfortunate enough to have burglary attempt I don't want to turn-on sirens individually, this is time I could be speaking with the police. The siren only runs for 30 seconds and automatically turns-off - Crazy! If I activate the siren, it's for no other reason than an intruder, imagine spending time to turn on all sirens only to have to continuously turn them on if the initial siren(s) didn't deter the intruder? So much wasted time. With Blink, I have a schedule setup via the app and it faithfully records any motion during that time, fully automated arm and disarm, if I activate the siren it stays on until I turn it off (and not just one but both). I think the issue is perspective, Ring concentrate their efforts on deterring intruders (just read their marketing or watch a TV advert) and not enough time thinking about how their products should react in the event of an intruder. Ring, great camera but sadly let down by app functionality. Having said that, all of the issues I describe are easily fixed with simple updates. Fix these issues and it's a solid five star product. At this point I will likely hold-off further investment to see if future app updates address any of these issues. My Blink system wins the day at this stage.

Fantastic cameras from Ring

The Ring cameras are fantastic, no problems at all. I paid for my cameras to be installed via amazons installation service but, that is because I'm disabled. I would have easily fitted these myself if I was still able-bodied.
I spent quite a bit of time doing my own research before opting for these Ring cameras, and I will share my knowledge if it helps. I'm with Sky as my ISP (Internet Service Provider) I only pay for 37 MBPS in speed. After doing my research on Wi-Fi mesh networks I decided to opt for the BT Whole Home Wi-Fi Triple Pack (which you can buy from amazon for £161.98) I didn't think they were overly expensive and It nearly doubled my speed up to 75 MBPS! The big bonus with these BT Wi-Fi discs is they work with any ISP (Internet Service Provider) be it Sky, Virgin, BT etc. There is also an Ethernet port at the back of each disc which means hard-wiring your Ring cameras via PoE (Power Over Ethernet) an absolute doddle. If you want a stable service and great picture with your Ring cameras you have to go PoE in my opinion instead of wireless. Only one of the discs has to be plugged into your router via Ethernet the other two you can move around your home to boost your signal. I live in a 2-bed bungalow and everything is working great for me but, I've also read many comments from people who live in houses who have purchased these discs, and they work great for them too.
The Ring cameras are fantastic, and getting the app for them via the play store for your phone or tablet is easy and free! The same goes for getting the app for your laptop from the Microsoft store for windows. I took out the monthly plan for the Ring cameras the same day great service all round.

Picture quality not as good as my doorbell pro

Bought this to go with other ring stuff I have in the house, I bought 2 of these to add to other cameras and doorbell.

My other ring product is the doorbell pro, we have thought this was great from day one. Hence the reason we bought 2 other ring cameras. The picture quality is no where near as good as my doorbell pro and not as good as the picture of my hardwired Cctv cameras, was a bit disappointed considering the cost of these, which is the reason I’m dropping 2 stars off the review.

It is handy being able to plug them in with Ethernet cables so there is no drop outs, just a shame on picture quality

Very Disappointed

After being really pleased with my Ring doorbell camera which we set up last week we decided to purchase this CCTV camera and was really looking forward to unpacking it.

I have to say we are really disappointed, so much so we may yet return it to Amazon.

To use it outdoors they recommend you use it with their 'Power Over Internet' adaptor, various leads & mains power. This is not have they have photographed it on here. I think this is a big issue as I now have a CCTV camera that I wanted to use outdoors but has to be hard wired to my internet router. Needless to say my router is not anywhere near the proposed camera location and the Cat 5 cable supplied is only around 1 meter long.

Ive tried using it indoors and although that only required 1 power lead and the wifi which was easy to set up, its unusable indoors if you want to cover outdoors, too much reflection from glass, especially from the cameras built in LED lights.

I'm not a technophobe so more than happy wiring up stuff but this camera is marketed as a simple solution, it is not if you want to hard wire in the camera outdoors. Plus you'll probably need to buy extra Cat 5 cable and even a mains internet adaptor if your router is in a different room.

Really wanted to like ring but

I have had had my ring stuff installed for about a month now and these are my thoughts

I really wanted to like these ring products but they fall short of where they need to be and what they can do. I had cheap Chinese cameras before which were buggy so I thought I would invest in something decent.

Image quality
I'd say it's ok, not amazing but on par with the cheap Chinese ones I had before. My kitchen camera is up high so I can check on my cats when in holiday etc and it faces the back door and windows (4m away) and you can't see anything outside as it's washed out in white.

When you zoom in the image is very grainy

Night mode
Not bad, what I would expect

App
The app works ok it's easy to use and doors what it needs to

Connectivity
This is my main gripe. It's slow. I have used POE for this camera and it still takes several seconds for it to connect through my phone. About 9 when in on the same network and about 15 when on LTE. I have the same issue with other ring products.

Sometimes out has also failed to connect.

Im also not impressed at how it doesn't integrate with other stuff like Google assistant and lifx

Audio
The audio is awful. It's not like the adverts. Firstly the built in voice is annoying and sounds patronising. It has that awful cheesy American accent. Secondly you can't have two way conversations through any of their devices. Audio breaks up on both ends and is useless. One of my Chinese cameras did better much better.

Support
I told ring what I thought about the camera and they offered tech support so I thought I'll try it. The chap was nice, new what he was doing but couldn't help improve the issues listed above.

I feel that the issues are fundamental flaws in the hardware. The packaging is nice, ring provide everything you need including support but the product isn't the best looking and the hardware needs upgrading, especially for the price.

Will I keep it
In short I probably will as I got this, the floodlight camera and the door bell on prime day for s lower price. Some security is better than none and the biggest reason is the subscription. While in enjoyed I can't record to my server ring charge £80 per year no matter how many cameras you have. I want to use nest as their cameras are far better but their subscription is massively overpriced.

Would I recommend ring
No I can't. I feel I would just get ear ache from my friends.

Great for outdoors where you have cabled network available

purchased my second one of these to fit to my garage, where I have a POE switch to power it.
my main concern with these, is the limited movement you have to position the view of the camera, there are 3rd party mounts available, which I may look into.
as with all Ring cameras, you have the same range of settings and functions in the App
night vision is good, but for me with my Hue Lights on sensor, isn't really needed
Using these POE capable cameras saves having to either run mains power, use a solar panel, or keep changing batteries, just one little hole in the soffit to drop a Cat6 patch lead down.

Good build quality, decent picture and impressive box contents - I'm particularly happy with the included POE injectors.

My biggest gripe is the fact that the company don't seem to grasp the difference between simplified and simplistic, the app and control options are seriously limited considering the price of both the hardware and the subscription. I'm seriously considering returning these and investigating the Arlo cameras.

I first purchased '2 of ieGeek Security WiFi Outdoor Camera 1080P Waterproof Home Surveillance Bullet IP Cameras' and had nothing but disappointment so sent them back and purchased this 'Ring Stick Up Cam Wired HD Security Camera' and it is excellent.

My house is an 1840 build with castle-like thick walls so Wi-fi isn't great (going to get a Netgear mesh extender). At the moment I have this camera sitting inside the kitchen looking out of a closed window and I am astonished at the ease of access and quality. The only hole you need to drill when properly installing it outside is a hole large enough to take a micro USB connector for power. (The previous camera had three wires hanging off of it and you need to drill a 3/4 inch hole to get them inside.)

The download from Ring is easy and I have installed it on Windows 10 (desktop) and my Android and it works perfectly. When it arrived the documentation was poor but I downloaded the manual from the Ring website. First I was unsure that the camera would work with wifi. Images in manual were unclear on this point. WOuld have been useless to me if it didn't. So, I called their 24/7 helpline and was assured it does and indeed it does.

Picture attached is through the glass of my kitchen window - not installed it fully yet and it is brilliant.

Unboxing was interesting, serious top quality boxing. It also came with everything, even a screwdriver with security screws and driver attachment as well as a masonry drill bit. I never expected that.

I must say Ring is a serious quality company that clearly cares about their products and their customers. A real quality product.

Great day time but night time....

I have mixed feelings about this camera.
This camera is used outdoor, connected using POE so no issues whatsoever with wifi connectivity. Motion detector works great in day time and it seems to capture a few seconds before motion was detected.
There have been a few instances that when motion is detected and you try to access the camera, it can take 20 secs or so to connect, but the recording did occur fine.

Night time though is a different story.
There is no motion detection at all when it is pitch black, irrespective how close you are to the camera. As soon as there is an outdoor light though, motion is detected fine

Upgraded the review from 3 to 5 stars.
I have been in touch with Ring suport who advice that the device night time vision could have been faulty and was replaced free of charge - the old device had to be sent back also for free.
I have been using the new device for at least 3 weeks now and night time motion detection when its pitch black is working perfectly.

I was also introduced to the Rapid Ring companion app which is stripped down version of the normal app and is used mainly for viewing and responding to notification. so far this is much more responsive when responding to a notification

I installed the camera 2 days before writing this review. The installation was easy, I ran a single ethernet cable from my PoE switch to the camera and everything was very straightforward to setup. One thing that did bug me was the gaping hole that the ethernet cable goes through. I know Ring says the product is weatherproof, but I struggled to accept that such a design was sufficiently protecting the device against the elements, so I used some Sugru mouldable glue to cover up the hole after plugging the cable into the camera (hopefully I don't regret this is the future).

In terms of the camera performance itself; I live on a busy (albeit entirely residential) road. That means the street is already well lit, so the night vision is very good. The downside of living on a busy road being that the motion detector goes off constantly, so I need to keep limiting the size of the detection zone. The picture quality is good, but I've mounted the camera about 4.5 metres high, which perhaps is a bit too high, as I cannot make out the numberplates of passing vehicles in the event of a hit and run.

I was previously considering the Nest Outdoor Cam, and even bought one but never put it up because I was uneasy about the magnet design which could be knocked off by someone throwing a tennis ball at it. I also didn't like that you had to feed a sizeable USB-A connector through the wall. The Ring has neither of those drawbacks, you can feed through some CAT5/6/7 and then use a crimping tool to put on the RJ45 connector meaning you only need to make a 5-6mm hole in your wall rather than a 22mm hole.

The siren is not very loud, although it may be of use in quieter neighbourhood -- I live in London. It's a similar story with the speaker. Taking all of the drawbacks into consideration, I've ordered another one which I'll use to keep an eye on the garden. Personally, I would say you get fairly good value for money, and the optional subscription is a lot more reasonable than all the other ones I've seen.
