Picture= 5/5 (43" 4k true 10bit panel is great, Try playing Blue planet on this thing, picture has great colour, real depth to the image shown, great colour reproduction)
sound= 4/5 (no sound bar required here)
Ambilight = 5/5 ( adds something extra to the experience
operating system= android tv, I really like it, its nicely presented, easy to use, all the apps I could wish for which are here...bbc iplayer, itv hub, more4, five On-demand, netflix and prime video, you have the google play store here also for further apps, the philips app store just ignore it, it hasn't improved since my last tv
specs= quad core cpu, 3gb of ram, 16gb onboard storage, 43" 4k true 10bit panel, not the (8+FRC) upscale that most manufacturers use.
Im really glad I took the jump on this Tv, I was darting back and forwards between options but I felt £450 for a true 4k 10bit panel was a steal, the app store hasn't disappointed, its nippy, the controller feels quality and responsive, Im really happy with this buy overall.

I did notice ordering the new TV the prices of the units did go up after the Christmas period on Amazon. The TV I sent back was £469 now that very same TV is £525.07 so that is worth noting, time of year of purchase may save you a few quid. After some research and not wanting other branded models I came across this unit at £499.00, I've actually over looked this TV before as I considered the Ambilight feature a bit of a gimmick, I'll come back to that later. I am disappointed with Amazon as they did not properly advise on time of delivery, as we bought this item with the TEMPORARY OUT OF STOCK message. I would have preferred more of an idea when to expect the TV to be delivered, however it took 4 weeks for it to be delivered. I was thinking about cancelling the order and choosing something else, am glad I didn't.
We decided on the 43" version as we have a small living room and didn't want to over power the room, shame that under 49" TV's are considered 2nd TV's i.e. bedroom. One feature on this TV is a wake up alarm, I don't know if this feature is in the bigger sized screens, as I don't own one. I did think if it was in my bedroom I would use it, I thought this feature was a nice touch.
I've only had the TV a week now and these are my first impressions.
1) It's an EXCELLENT TV Phillips have put a lot of love into this TV, compared to my other models of LCD TV's of the last decade. The build construction is robust, meaning that it has that quality feel to it, less flimsy compared to other models in the mid-budget range. My other TV's were made of mostly plastic in this range, including the back panel of the TV. To my surprise on this model the back panel is made of metal, like on the more expensive models, it really does improve the feel and has what I expect of a quality build in a TV, for the price bracket. All in all I am impressed with the quality of the build, its feels like they pushed the boat out on this, not skimping out on us for the sake of profit. As a bonus went on my wall bracket really easily, btw I installed the wall bracket same day as I received the TV. I enjoyed the process of putting this TV up, really easy!
2) Since I had the pleasure of the other TV for a few weeks whilst my issues were getting sorted, I feel on the picture quality the other brand was better, the picture quality had more true life to it. So this has been bugging me for the past week, honestly with that said there is nothing wrong with the picture quality of this TV. After doing a bit of fiddling in the setting to adjust the image quality to my liking. The reds are red, blues are blues, greens are greens and the blacks are adequate (good) for the price of the TV bordering on great. I think its me over processing the image quality, all in all I am not disappointed with the picture quality I am perfectly delighted with it. I have come to the end of writing this review and realised that I didn't mention the 4K HDR 10, I cannot confirm that HDR kicked in when viewing. But between my SkyQ box, Amazon Prime and Netflix viewing in 4K. This looks amazing, the details are sharp and crisp colours are fantastic, I do have some concerns over contrast though but am sure I can fix this in the settings, I've only had the TV a week so still tweaking.
3) Sound is always a factor on TV's with this form factor, out of the TV speakers the sound is adequate loud and a bit tinny, which is always a contentious area. Perfectly adequate for the less sound fussy, for those who are connected to my soundbar it sounds great through this 3rd party device, it really BOOMS!
4) The Android firmware is great, first time I've use this software on a TV and is perfectly adequate, I found the features extensive compared to my other TV's. This TV packs in a lots of features for its price bracket, however I did buy a TV with Bluetooth so I can connect my Bluetooth headphones for late night viewing. TV says it has this feature, but at this moment in time I haven't got this to work. I've only had the TV a week, so I'll work on this area and will update. All in all I am delighted with the hardware ports, has all I presently need, I did like the HDMI ARC being available on all the HDMI ports that was a great touch too. As my other TV's only had this on 1 port, I suppose 1 port is all you really need, at least you can plug in your ARC device without switching cables.
To sum up:
This is a great TV and you'll won't be disappointed with it in my opinion, the Ambilight feature which initially did put me off this type of unit. As I considered it a bit of a gimmick, strangely does add something to the ambiance of TV viewing. So I am converted to this feature, I would much prefer to have this feature on than not, however I could live without it.

Picture quality is superb, with bright, clear colours, good movement and of course ultra high definition. The TV has Dolby Vision (a format of high dynamic range 4K picture) and Dolby Atmos (a high-end sound system), giving superb quality from compatible apps and connected devices.
Sound quality is very good considering the speakers aren’t even visible. There are a few sound settings available but the basic out-of-the-box one is fine for most programmes. There’s isn’t that annoyingly tinny sound you get with some modern TVs, so no need for a sound bar unless you want to take things up a level.
The operating system is Android, which to be honest isn’t anything exciting. The range of apps is pretty limited, more so than on Samsung TVs running on Tizen, or on plug-in devices such as Apple TV and Fire TV. Of course there’s Netflix and BBC iPlayer, but there’s no Britbox or NOW TV. There’s nothing particularly satisfying or intuitive about how Android TV works, especially compared to Apple TV. So I wouldn’t choose this TV for that alone, I’m sticking to my external Apple TV box for streaming content.
The TV has a memory function so will return to what was last on, be it live TV, one of the app menus or an external input. The standard Freeview Play TV guide allows catchup on available programmes. The built-in tuner seems a little weak, not picking up as many Freeview multiplexes as some TVs (I’m in a bit of marginal area so some of the HD channels are borderline and not picked up by this set). There’s also a Freesat tuner so dual options if you have a dish and an aerial.
The TV’s menus are a little dull and need a few clicks to access everything, but are reasonably straight forward.
One of the big features of this TV is the Ambilight system, which outputs light from the LEDs on the rear of the set. These can be set colours, can be set to vary to the sound output or left in the default setting of adjusting according to the picture on screen, with the colours matching those being displayed. It’s a pleasant effect. I’m not sure it’s quite the revelation Philips claim it to be, but you do get used to it and in an otherwise dark room is a nice light source and of course there’s no reflection on the screen since it’s behind it. The Ambilight is always on unless you turn it off, including in the daytime in bright rooms when you can barely see it. It would make sense if the TV knew this and switched it off automatically.
Finally, the TV is pretty inefficient in terms of energy and uses a lot of power. It’s G rated for energy, which is pretty diabolical these days, and rated at about 150W, which is at least 50W more than most comparable TVs. I guess the Ambilight accounts for some of this. I suppose with the Ambilight on you could turn off some table lamps saving you about 10W each.
So it’s a nice TV. Not perfect. The Ambilight is a nice gimmick. Picture quality is excellent, sound is great. It looks nice too. A good all round TV, but it uses a lot of energy.
