Philips usually have to tick three boxes. Overpriced? Tick. Ugly/Utilitarian? Tick. Badly Designed? Tick. This product is definitely overpriced. It's a button. Neither the rubber nor the electronics inside are anything out of the ordinary. In fact it's their limited software that does most of the fancy stuff. It comes with a wall plate that is smaller than any light switch base in this country. Why? Most people already have light switches. Why not include covers to go over those rather than have to buy them like I did.

So far, so usual. However, these actually look better than Philips' previous attempt which was a tacky badly made plastic set of buttons. This step back is a good step up for them. At least once you've bought the cover.

Once Philips understand that very few people want two light switches next to one another on their walls (and don't want to pay a fortune for it) then they might finally make progress.

Edit:. The novelty has gone & Philips' inability to design anything decent has shone through. The switches (I have two) have minds of their own & often 'reset' their functions. Since installing these my other lights have started playing up for no apparent reason. I have gone from a carefully & painstakingly arranged ecosystem to one that makes me want to throw away every smart bulb I have. If they didn't look better than Philips other abominations of light switches I would have given this no stars (if possible).

Edit: These are shocking. Just over a year old and one has already failed. Have chucked it away. Am now left with a devil's choice - replace it or go without. I'm damned if I do and damned if I don't. Do yourself a favour and leave automated lights alone until Tesla, Apple or Google start making them.

3,0 van 5 sterren Perfectly adequate but hampered by the Hue app
Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 8 oktober 2020
Geverifieerde aankoop
For anyone familiar with the Hue ecosystem, this will be a doddle to setup and integrate into your Hue system. The button is incredibly discreet and can be mounted pretty much anywhere.

That said, much of the "smartness" of the button is hampered by the Hue app. You basically pick an area, room or lights to control aaaaand that's it. Sure, you can dim the lights (but that's not a smart feature). There's an option to vary your action according to time but I literally can't think of a good scenario for that outside of kids' bedtimes. Where are my options to control other Hue components (turn the lights on and disable the motion sensor)? How do I integrate it into other smart systems (you don't)?

It's a good price for the hardware and is a great alternative to the much larger light switch remote. I remain an advocate of Hue and their lights but am getting frustrated with their walled garden approach.

Let's be clear: this isn't a "smart button" -- it's a basic Hue switch and little else. If that meets your requirements, go for it!

2,0 van 5 sterren I don't like it very much -- it's overpriced, it feels cheap and it's counter-intuitive.
Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 8 november 2020
Geverifieerde aankoop
It's an overpriced button that doesn't do very much and is a bit counter-intuitive.

The dimmer is overpriced too, but you can kind of see where your money went -- the smart button, however, feels like it's worth about £3.99.

Firstly, the feel -- it has a strange silicone texture that feels a little too rubbery for my liking.

Secondly, when it's in position, it looks like it should twist to dim -- and obviously it does not twist, you need to press and hold for this.

So you get a choice -- 5 Hue Scenes controlled by individual clicks, or 5 different scenes that will come on depending on the time you press the button.

I'm not going to bother with the timed function -- I prefer to control things myself.

So, for the 'normal' function, in order to get the right scene, you need to learn to calculate the speed of your clicks -- the same for when you want to turn it off. You get used to it, but it's not so great if guests have to learn it too. Click too slow and you turn it off and need to start again.

Overall, the Hue dimmer is a lot more intuitive (and sometimes cheaper) -- which is why I have five of those and only one of these.

2,0 van 5 sterren Good hardware, terrible software
Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 7 april 2020
Geverifieerde aankoop
I bought this as I wanted a simple on/off button by the front door to turn on/off all the lights in the house when I left or entered.

However, due to the software in the hue hub, the button can't be used as an on/off device unless the button is the only device controlling the lights.
If you control the lights with another button, dimmer, with routines or via the app the ll button becomes useless.
The button basically work as an on/last state button, so if your lights were already in when the button is pressed it becomes an on/on button so it's basically useless.
You can set it up with press & hold to dim or turn off your lights but it's cumbersome to use.

The hardware itself is really nice.
Shame about the software implementation is so poor.

3,0 van 5 sterren Works with Alexa is misleading/incorrect
Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 5 januari 2021
Geverifieerde aankoop
This review relates to usage in the UK only - when using Alexa dots 2nd/3rd gen, Alexa Show 5, Alexa Show 8.

Firstly, the device does what it Philips says it does - ie: button presses will control hue device e.g. light bulbs. On that basis - I'm happy with the purchase. That said, 'works with Alexa' is misleading and incorrect - given that the button will NOT trigger an Alexa routine (this was already mentioned in previous reviews) AND cannot see non-Philips devices that are visible to Alexa.

To put it simply, when you've configured your Smart Button - there will be no reference to it from anywhere within the Alexa app - no matter how many times you search for the device. As such this device 'works' with Alexa in exactly the same way as my big toe does.

PS I would love to find out that I'm incorrect - and perhaps there is some kind of software config issue at my end - so please let me know :-)

3,0 van 5 sterren Easy to set up, works well, but IMO a little overpriced and with limited features
Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 30 december 2019
Geverifieerde aankoop
Purchased to give easy on/off control of a single light (at present the only Hue light in the room). Paired easily enough with the Hue bridge, on/off operations seem to be quite reliable. Square mounting plate did stick firmly to the wall using just its two pieces of double-sided tape and the magnetic "grip" of the button onto the plate is sufficient.

As others have commented, the square wall plate is smaller than, and cannot be used to cover (or hide) an existing wall switch.

Note that when pressing the button to turn light(s) ON, it may be necessary to wait a few seconds before pressing it again and expecting the light(s) to be turned OFF; press the button sooner and it may instead step on to the next defined scene...

The button is smaller and less mechanically complicated than the older "smart dimmer switch" - so why is it more expensive ?

In my opinion there are some mechanical design (and potential safety) issues:

(a) Button is supplied with the battery already installed and "running"; there is no pull-out plastic tab or similar to "activate" the battery. Some have complained that they received their buttons with the battery already exhausted!
(b) Small size of button when detached from its mounting plate makes it in my opinion a safety hazard if babies/toddlers are around (it's small enough that they could chew on it or put it in their mouths)!
(c) It is very difficult to get the back off if it becomes necessary to reset the button (e.g. to re-pair it with the same or a different Hue bridge) or to change the battery. The battery (CR2032 coin cell) is also quite fiddly to get in/out of its holder.

Biggest set-up and use limitation is that it can control either "all Hue lights" (great if you're going out and want a "turn off all the lights" button) or just a single room (finer "granularity", controlling single light fittings or bulbs is not possible without workarounds).
Two popular workarounds:
(a) Get creative with "rooms and zones" (put the lights to be controlled togther as a "room" - if there are other Hue lights in the same physical room, group them in a "zone"). Both the Hue app and Alexa can work with such groups of lights whether these are "rooms" or "zones" (Alexa doesn't show the distinction; treats a "room" or "zone" as being a single virtual light that can be turned on/off, dimmed, etc.).
(b) Get creative with "scenes"; note that in a scene you can define the behaviour of each individual light in a room, so by creating a set of scenes having different lights on and off the button can usefully control several lights (press the button several times in succession to step through different useful combinations of which lights are on and off). Example - a room having a ceiling light and two wall lights, the smart button configured in "scene cycle" mode:
i. First push - built-in default scene "Dimmed" (will apply to all lights in the room)
ii. Second push - built-in default scene "Bright" (will apply to all lights in the room)
iii. Third push - user-created scene "Bright - ceiling light only"; wall lights configured to be OFF
iv. Fourth push - user-created scene "Dimmed - ceiling light only"; wall lights configured to be OFF
v. Fifth push - user-created scene "Dimmed - wall lights only"; applied to both wall lights, ceiling light configured to be OFF

1,0 van 5 sterren Hue - normally great. But don’t buy this.
Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 5 juni 2020
Geverifieerde aankoop
Normally really rate hue stuff, but this is awful. Truely really bad.

The set up was painful. And has had to be reset at least twice in the last 3 months.

The interface is poor. Basically it’s click to cycle through 5 different brightness options. But there are only three brightness options - bright - dim - nightlight. So why it needs five settings I don’t know. Fundamentally it misses the mark as a dimmer switch. And it’s certainly not smart.

The battery life is shocking. Sub 3 months in my case.

Trying to change the battery is an inexplicably complicated process involving lots of plastic tabs which inevitably snap off.

I’m glad I only bought one. Couldn’t imagine how annoyed I’d be if I changed every switch in our house to this. We’d be forever changing batteries and have ‘smart’ buttons which don’t dim.

I think the normal design team must have been away for this one and they let the work experience team have a crack at this.

The normal hue dimmer is great. My advice would be to stick with that.

1,0 van 5 sterren False advertising - Not Alexa Compatible
Beoordeeld in het Verenigd Koninkrijk op 26 maart 2021
Geverifieerde aankoop
I bought this Smart Button because by the name of the product at the top of the page, this is an Alexa compatible product. It is not.

Edit: Phillips has now renamed the product listing instead of offering buyers a refund!!!

Alexa does not see this device, and it is likely Alexa never will see this device. It is not Alexa compatible. I am hoping that Google Home Assistant can do a better job.

If you wanted your Hue lights to work to a routine at a press of the Hue Smart Button then think again because this is not the product for you. If you thought the Smart Button would add an element of smartness to your Hue ecosystem then you have gotten the wrong impression.

The Hue Smart Button is a confused product, it's use case is already covered by two other official Hue accessories and one of the those is nearly half the price and has dimmer buttons built in. There is no plausible and useful reason why this product exists. The cheaper dimmer switch is superior and the "Smart" Button doesn't even work with Hue Labs because Phillips hasn't bothered to add the device as a trigger.

The 'Smart' functionality is pretty much non-existent, you cannot press the "Smart" Button and expect a single or multiple lights to go through a timed routine. Such as green for 90 minutes then orange for 30 minutes and then red until you either press the button again or turn the light off. That by the way would use smart lights to let you know a baby's Milk needs changing, that is the sort of idea customers get when thinking about smart lights. You do not get anything like that with the "Smart" Button.

No, you will not get any of that. Because this device IS NOT Alexa compatible as confirmed by Alexa's developer... Amazon!

What you do get with the "Smart" Button is one light changing how bright it is depending what time of the day it is. Day. The keyword is 'day'. Want to turn your light on at midday with glorious sunlight shining through the windows? Well then maybe this is the product for you, and make sure to stop by a hardware store to find a great deal on a diesel powered solar panel!
