Coming apart - sides falling off - Otterbox v poor customer service

Very disappointing product. The sides have peeled and the phone keeps dropping out as you can see from the video. This is the second Otterbox product which has fallen apart after less than 1 year in use. Furthermore, the grip on the back is ineffective. Otterbox customer support refuse to help or provide a replacement. Given the cost of these phone ‘protectors’ it’s very poor service indeed. Poor product and a poor choice. No more Otterboxes for me 😖

Ces protection sont toujours efficaces. Le téléphone est très bien protégé.
Un peu difficile à mettre et à enlever mais on ne fait pas ça tous les jours.
Un point important à savoir, elle n'est pas compatible MagSafe.

It could be awesome, but it’s probably just a regular case

First off, I bought the case for about $44, and i wouldn't but it again at that price (unless it is thermal diode or siphon). For $10-$15 yea, maybe. I will probably end up keeping it, as it is comfortable and Otterbox has a reputation of solid cases. The CoolVergence heat shield is my major issue with the case, see the third paragraph.

The case seems robust and is solid, and the buttons are easily found by touch and articulated. The texture on the back is nice, although nothing ground breaking. Also, the back is not vented, it looks like the texture could be a dense fabric, which maybe could have worked with the CoolVergence system, but it’s not. Also, I’m skeptical of need for the “antimicrobial case protection”. Fine print says: “Helps protect the case exterior against many common bacteria. It does not protect you or the controller. Active ingredient: silver phosphate glass.” Does the case need to be protected from bacteria, can the case get sick or an infection from bacteria?

My biggest beef is that I think the “CoolVergence” is a bit of a marketing gimmick. The package says: CoolVergence- Internal shield dissipates heat, improves frame rate during gameplay”. It does appear that there is a pad on the inside back of the case that will contact the back of the phone, I’m assuming this is the CoolVergence…? However, I have noticed my phone still getting very hot with this case (not just the back of the case but the front of the phone, too), and I guess, technically the package never says it’ll cool your phone, just “dissipates heat, improves frame rate”. So, yes it probably does dissipate heat, but I think most anything attached to the back of the phone would dissipate heat. I think what matters is how quickly the case can dissipate heat to the surroundings (away from the phone), and I am not convinced that the case has any significant dissipating properties.

That being said, if the CoolVergence is a thermal diode or thermal siphon (which it might be as the packaging says it’s a “shield” - so maybe that means heat can flow in on direction better than the other - I think it could be pretty awesome. If it is just a highly conductive pad, I think it’ll just absorb the heat from its surroundings and transfer it to what ever has leas heat. So, if the case is in the sun, or some other hot environment, chances are that the case could be hotter than phone and the thermal conductivity of the pad will conduct the heat to the phone. If the pad IS a thermal diode/siphon, and i would want to see some data before reaching any final conclusion, (again) it could be pretty awesome.

I think the benefit of the CoolVergence is that it acts as extra thermal mass or a thermal dampener /dashpot (remember HS?) to delay any heat spikes. So, if the battery heats up really quickly the pad could absorb the heat and lengthen the time it takes to get to the max temp. Think of the shock absorbers on a bike, and your much bigger friend just leaned on the handlebars with all their weight. With just springs set to your weight (i.e. no CoolVergence) the shocks will bottom-out almost immediately, WITH the dampener (i.e. yes CoolVergence) the shocks will still bottom-out, but not as fast, potentially reducing the impact. If there was any kind of hard data that could show how effectiveness of the CoolVergence, I would very interested in seeing it, and would consider revising my rating.
