I was quite excited by this book - written by Ben Miller, I thought it would be well writen and funny, it had a beautiful front cover AND for once I wouldn't have change Santa to Father Christmas every sentence because here was a book about Father Christmas. It had promising reviews, I couldn't wait to read it to my children. However I felt very disappointed - the first Chapter we loved, it was funny, we were gripped and then it changed into a re-write of the Christmas Carol. Sigh. OK, it was well written and the Christmas Carol story all connected in the end. I liked the fact the chapters weren't too long and we could read three or four of a night, but as it approached Christmas, we were happy to put it down and read our " Christmas favourites" and pick it up again after Christmas. My six year old was more gripped than my nine year old, and they were recalling some elements of the story today to a lady they were chatting to - these were from the final chapter (which I have to say, I really liked, it was just a shame about everything inbetween). Would I recommend it? It was OK, but I wouldn't rush out to buy it, maybe borrow it from the library. There were a couple of illustrations in the book, but they were very spread out.

This was purchased, delivered, and devoured by my 8YO daughter all in about 3 days. She read this after reading another Ben Miller novel and this was equally awesome.

It has lovely illustrations and a storyline that chugs along nicely, with enough to keep interest and yet still quite magical, especially when read on the run up to xmas like we did.

Superb.

I'd heard a colleague reading another of Ben Miller's books (The day I fell into a fairytale) to her class at school and thought it sounded brilliant. Came to buy that one and ended up with a whole Ben Miller collection. Decided to start with this one and it's become our bedtime story book, I read a chapter.... Or two, sometimes three, each night before bed.

My daughter's, 7 and 11, are really enjoying the story, it's not too young for my eldest, but not too difficult for my youngest to listen too, and it's made me laugh out loud a few times. My youngest usually has no patience for stories and it's a battle to get her to sit still long enough to ready but she is now rushing to get ready for bed and begging for another chapter each night.
It really keeps you wanting to know more and the story is fun and engaging. My eldest has made a few predictions as we've gone through and has enjoyed being right, or sometimes wrong about things. We are enjoying the similarities to another classic Christmas story as well but it doesn't feel like a copycat story, it's completely its own story.

I have to say as well, the illustrations in this book are just incredible, we love when there's a picture page and stop reading to pour over the details before we continue. It's such an incredible touch. They really are stunning pieces of art.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough, we are just over halfway through and I'm already hating the fact that the book will end. But at least I have a few others to get stuck straight into.

One of the best Christmas books I have ever read. The story is very similar to Christmas Carol, but is beautifully written and makes you really feel for the characters. My sons of 4 and 9 have really enjoyed listening to me reading them the story and were begging to read extra pages every night. The story is very warm and emotional and we all were so happy it finished well for Torvil and Gerda.

I have to say I have already ready Ben Millers other two books, the day I fell into a fairytale and the boy who made the world disappear and enjoyed reading them to my six year old but this book is fantastic. What a pleasurable book to read. My son had been enjoying it but I have to. Would definitely recommend. Looking forward to the next book to be released in September.
