Compost Accelerator
Hoe werkt Compost Accelerator?

In 2016 my husband bought an acre of land for me to play with. I wanted it because I felt sorry for it. One of the reasons for this was Japanese knotweed. This evil plant is almost impossible to kill, since it has become resistant to all weedkillers in my local area (West Cornwall). Local builders prepare a site by digging out and cleaning all the soil, but that is not an option for me.
I have had a few years experience with knotweed, and know that it can be at least driven into dormancy by repeated mowing - but how do you mow something which is 8 feet high? And the clippings must be treated as contaminated waste by law.
I have found that the best way of coping with it is to break off all the old, dead stems in February. They can easily be burned. Then as new growth begins, I pull it out every week, and put it into a 1 tonne "dumpy" bag. In four years I have not found it to be able to escape from these, but I do keep them within the area of knotweed infestation, just in case.
Knotweed can grow up to a metre in a week, so a bag will fill quite quickly. It is impossible to burn unless there is somewhere safe to dry it out - an unused greenhouse is ideal. But by using these compost accelerator tablets, which I bought in July, I can compost it down much more quickly than before. An amount of knotweed which fills a dumpy bag, covered with a black rubbish bag weighed down with stones, will reduce by about a third in two weeks in the summer.
I was composting the knotweed before I discovered these accelerator tablets, but it took longer. In 2017, I grew potatoes in the compost in one of the bags. They tasted slightly odd, but no knotweed shoots have been seen from that batch of compost in the 3 years since. I think flowers might have been more sensible, though.
Now I can easily mow the first area of infested land I dealt with, as grass and all kinds of wildflowers have moved into what was a knotweed monoculture. I still put the clippings into a dumpy bag and treat them with this accelerator. In the fullness of time, I hope to be able to return the compost to the ground in the areas of infestation, with surveillance and continuing care.

If your compost bin/pile is small (my bin is 220l) crumble each tablet in 1l of water, not in 5l as the it says on the instructions, or you’ll end up with a soggy compost and slowing down the process.

Using the product: I dissolved one tablet in 5ltr warm water for between 30 - 60 minutes as directed. Once this was done I used a garden fork to make a well in the center of each heap and poured the water via a watering can into the center of the piles (each heap had a tablet each). I then infilled the holes with the material inside each bin and replaced the lids to keep as much heat in as possible. I can see that some people found it made the contents of their bins too wet, I think if you don't have a lot in them you need to adjust accordingly. My compost seems OK and not too wet.
Today it was a week since I added the Envii Accelerator and I had cleaned out my rabbits and chickens, whose droppings and sawdust I add to the compost each week. I dug each bin over fairly well, as soon as each lid came off I could smell that the materials inside are breaking down, the center of each heap was also warm. I had also noticed that there were a lot of worms in the compost this time, they seem to have been attracted to the bins since adding this magic ingredient. I am looking forward to having great compost within the new few months, maybe sooner! If they are broken down well before Spring I will bag up the compost and store it and start the bins off again. There really isn't so much need to buy compost if you recycle as much kitchen and garden waste as possible :) cuts out plastic too :)
