3,0 van 5 sterren Slow start, picks up a bit, THEN becomes repetitive

I loved the changes that Odyssey brought to the series, and actually rate is as high as the classic Ezio years. With this in mind, I was very eager to see how Valhalla fared.

As stated in my title, the first section is quite a slow start. Norway is quite blank as a setting, and the first few tasks feel so typical. The default control scheme is AWFUL too, they seem to have altered it entirely since Odyssey. Luckily, you can customise it, but you'll be constantly changing it mid-gameplay as they've added so many actions and you'll just get button clashes. There was a distinct lack of hay bales in Norway too, so any viewpoint has to be shimmied down rather than lept from - VERY ANNOYING. I had a few minor glitches in gameplay, but nothing that required a restart like other reviewers. The graphics aren't great, they've taken a step back from Odyssey, but they're not completely awful. Lots of well-animated sequences make up for these too.

Once you get to England (not really a spoiler) things soon pick up. Hunting down the Cult of Cosmos was one of my favourite things about Odyssey and that system is back thankfully. All of a sudden, you're presented with loads of tasks and quests to go on, and this is where the game excels.

I'm about 10 hours in and am hooked now, after some initial underwhelment. If you're on the fence about buying it, I'd wait until it comes down in price a bit. £50 is a lot for a game, especially one less than perfect, but I would say that naysayers should give it a bit more of a go before dismissing it entirely

22/12/2020 EDIT:

Ok, this game has soon become super repetitive and just not that fun to play. I've been at it for 70 hours now, and it feels like the story has barely moved along. There's been 1/2 vaguely interesting moments but not enough to warrant that much play time. Most mission threads feel more like the more boring side quests from Odyssey, and follow the same structure. It says a lot that I found "The Legend Of The Hidden Blade" DLC from Odyssey more exciting than this, and that wasn't even the best DLC of Odyssey!

Remember how fun it was weakening the strength of nations? You'd scope out a fort, loot their chest, stealthily assassinate their captains and then face the nation leader. Well, none of that is present in Valhalla, loot is fairly pointless and money has little to no bearing on any of the game. The gear upgrade system also seems to make no difference, an enemy is either easily killed with 2 heavy attacks or is above your level and impossible to fight. You'd think upgrading your gear would make you a worthy opponent right? Nope, your gear doesn't change that. Upgrading your Ravensthorpe homestead doesn't really change anything either, you just get temporary passive combat bonuses if you throw a feast... great! This is how the game feels in general, what am I working towards?

I have no idea how far I am into the game, but I've only been forced out of the animus once, into the present day. This is a slog of a game, and I really hope it has a fantastic ending to warrant this tedium.

3,0 van 5 sterren A saga of the mediocre.

Much as I love Viking legend and myth, the gameplay here is a major disappointment. As the game starts, the first ten minutes is dreadful. Featuring possibly the worst song ever, and your young Eivor character hobbling slowly about on two broken legs. The skill trees are an absolute mess. and the gear system is bland. Not a patch on Origins or Odyssey. The game is now more warriors creed, than assassins. Stealth seems to have been cast aside. Graphically the settings are awesome, but the characters are drab, and look about two generations out of date. All in all, the game seemed rushed and half finished. It lacks the polish that could have made it great.

Remember when AC: Origins came out and it was just like a gift from the Gods? Well take away half of those improvements and you have Valhalla.

This game looks awful on the PS4. It looks older than Origins does, the facial animations are just terrible and it has The Skyrim Curse in that everyone and everywhere just looks identical. I'm severely underwhelmed and really sad, as I'd been excited about this particular game for a really long time.

The bugs? Lots and lots. Audio keeps disappearing and going out of synch. No graphical glitches to my knowledge. Slow loading times compared to earlier games (even though it has a tiny file size, which was nice to see).

I don't like the new method of pathfinding. The bird is utterly useless, things are difficult to tag and the map is almost impossible to follow these days. I hate the Dragon Age Origins "power" style where you are forced to run around collecting garbage in order to proceed onto the next part of the map.

For example, the opening area is Power Level 1. The next area is Power Level 280, and if like me you just played through the story, you'll find yourself at about Power Level 10 and wondering WTF you're supposed to actually do to build all that up.

I may change my mind, and therefore my review, but right now it feels like a slog. I am only playing it cos I can't exactly send it back at this point.

3,0 van 5 sterren Assassins Creed Whatever

Another year and another Assassins Creed game is released, they are starting to get a bit like Fifa Soccer. Once again the same format is followed, with just a few tweaks to try and justify releasing a new game. If you have played any other Assassins Creed game recently you know what to expect.

My favourite Assassins Creed game, and I have played them all, remains the first one. At the time it was the most revolutionary, most innovative and most ambitious game of its generation. Since then Ubisoft have kind of followed an "if it aint broke don't fix it" kind of approach with different historical settings but the same basic gameplay. When they released Assassins Creed Origins there was an attempt to do something new by introducing more roleplaying elements but they didn't quite work - you still could not make your own character, and nothing you did in the game made any difference to the game world, the plot was entirely linear.

Roll on two more games and Assassins Creed Valhalla suffers form the same failings. Yes its a big open world, yes there are skill trees to develop, yes you can build your own settlement. But the question is more in which order will you do these things rather than will you do them at all. At no point is there any real choice to turn around and switch sides, or risk everything on one decision. The massive open world map is laid out before you from the start and it just feels more like a chore visiting all the points that are marked to find out what is there.

In addition to this Valhalla brings with it some of the worst elements of previous games, the ongoing idea that you are a time traveller using your ancestors memories to explore the past. Whenever the story starts to get going it is inevitably interrupted by another scene form the future or some puzzle game that needs solving. Also, the story of Assassins vs Templars makes no sense whatsoever in the historical context of the game and feels extremely forced. Templars now just stand for any bad guys, and Assassins are good guys, which seems a huge historical contradiction.

Technically the game itself is very impressive, despite a large number of bugs that plagued it on release. The graphics are stunning, and there is a large attention to detail in the flora and fauna of Dark Ages England. At times the fights can be good fun, although the elaborate animated finishing moves only serve to remind you how little control you actually have. The open world map is huge and there is plenty to see and do as you can pick up optional quests, usually in order to gain experience and loot.

As if to remind you how much of a chore it is to collect all this stuff and do all these quests Valhalla once again includes the option to pay real world money to buy cheat packs. So if you want more resources or better weapons and armour you can pay cash to save yourself hours of tedious gameplay. Following this logic you could just pay Ubisoft £200 to get a trophy saying you completed Assassins Creed Valhalla and not have to play the game at all.

Overall then I'm not impressed by this latest release. There is very little here that is new and the gameplay just feels repetitive and tiresome. If you've never played an Assassins Creed game before you will probably love it, but for those of us who have played the whole series it just feels like more of the same. If they really want to make a roleplaying game there must be more freedom in the characters you play and the decisions you make actually have to mean something. Until then its just going through the motions.

I still play odyssey, it's one of my favourites in the series. Pre ordered this expecting a similar experience with new storyline, a few tweaks here and there etc.
What a comedown. It's not too bad, just not as good as ones previous (my own personal opinion obviously)
I have to add though, the fact this game is already on offer from several retailers speaks volumes...

3,0 van 5 sterren Whole game feels like side-quests

I'm 40 hours into this game and I feel like the story structure has started to become really lacklustre and repetitive. Each region has it's own story arc which you have to complete before it is allied with you. These arcs can be very tedious (starting to cringe every time I see I have to burn ANOTHER supply wagon / grain silo) and often seem to have no bearing on the development of the main story whatsoever.

It kinda feels like they reached a point where they realised that they didn't have much of a story but they still had their deadlines, so kinda gave up and made this patchwork story of side-quests, many featuring a bunch of forgettable characters that you don't see again.

Now, I haven't completed the game and I'm told there's some sort of pay-off at the end for gathering allies etc, but after 40 hours of what feels like burning supply wagons and raiding castles on repeat, I'm told I'm only about halfway through the game! There's also some mercenary type people to kill from a checklist like in Odyssey and a settlement to build, so I'm guessing I've got at least another 40 hours.

I enjoy the graphics, building, combat and many other aspects of the game, but I just don't think it's worth the time investment. After 40 hours of mainly forgettable side-quest style missions, I just don't trust that the game is going to reward me for my time. I've still given it 3 stars because I feel that until now, it's generally been quite enjoyable, but it's never great, it's just 'fine/OK' all the time. This would've been ok for a 30 - 40 hour game, but there's still SO MUCH left I just don't see myself completing it.

ALSO, hopefully some of the bugs will have been patched by the time you read this, but when I bought it at launch they were AWFUL. One time the game even refused to load at all after a crash, so I had to re-install it!

I had not played any AC games since the original 'Trilogy' ending with Connor. When I saw AC Odyssey I was impressed at the recreation/interpretation of Ancient Greece so I got that. It was beautiful and the game mechanics were so far removed from the old AC games it was a fun game to play apart from being a LOT of grind to power up, and if I am honest I never was a huge fan of the sea battles, but the sailing was nice instead of fast travel. I think I got caught up in the hype of ACV, but when I started playing it, this game feels like a re-skin of ACO with mostly better graphics.

Honestly, although the graphics in ACV are pretty stunning in the landscapes and characters, there are awful bugs and glitches, e.g. where mouths don't animate during dialogue, or bushes that you're hiding in suddenly disappearing, or the objectives literally missing/unclickable in feast missions.

The initial map locations are interesting and nicely done... until you start visiting more locations and realise around halfway thru the game how much reuse/repetition of graphical assets there is, leading to tons of identical buildings/details. It's glaringly obvious the designers/developers were very lazy. Even huge chunks of a 'clean marble and fancy-looking' location (no spoilers here!) gets blatantly reused elsewhere with 'run-down' textures, re-skinned to try and mask this ugly fact. It gives you deja vu, but not in a good way, until you realise why and it cheapens the whole experience.

What is just hugely disappointing, after the spectacle of ACO's Ancient Greece (where I have visited IRL and the recreations are nostalgic), is then travelling to ACV's places in England (where I live!) and being totally underwhelmed.

Story-wise ACV is interesting, has a fair bunch of twists and turns if a bit contrived at moments (I'm around 65% thru atm). There are some absolutely hilarious English folklore/popular media parodies and comedic moments (I'm gonna say... popular music reference.. wink wink, not a spoiler!) to look out for. Plays on famous places, names and people etc.

Other than that, the game is a typical Ubisoft 'grind/collect the hell out of it (or buy loot boxes) to level up.' just like ACO was. In my opinion, for the Assassin's Creed franchise to survive, it needs to evolve dramatically into something very different than just the continually rehash the same thing. It took 6 yrs from AC3 (2012) to evolve into the better ACO (2018), so I do not see myself buying another AC game... maybe I will revisit AC in another 6 yrs (VR real Animus ftw?? one can only hope lol)

After playing the last AC game Odyssey which I enjoyed immensely I thought it would be hard for Ubisoft to come up with something better. After playing the game for about 3 hours I have to say I’m disappointed and this game is a step backwards in the series. The look and feel of the game is different the graphics aren’t brilliant and the controls have been changed not for the better. After playing the game for a few hours I have no desire to play the game again in a hurry which I would have done with previous AC games. I regret buying this on the day of release and wish I had waited a few months for the price to drop it’s not worth the full price of £50 as it stands at present.

GREAT graphics etc but broken mission forces you to restart the game.. for the price you'd imagine it would be fixed considering it's been reported since before the release. Also loaded with micro transactions for some reason you can pay to make your boat look like a unicorn since that's very historical of Viking era..
