After setting it up and noticing the top row of buttons has no response, I contacted Apple support. After attempting multiple times to check the validity of the product with the serial number, the error message “We’re sorry but this serial number isn’t valid” shows.

I would like a refund on this product that is clearly counterfeit, but I feel unwilling to return it to the seller for them to surely resell it to another unfortunate buyer.

This keyboard is fake! The top function rows do not work, and the serial number doesn't come up on apples database!

Genuine product but top row of keys not working

Similar to other reviews the top row of keys wouldn't work and upon putting the SN into apple support it comes up as not valid...but then I spotted that you need to enter your mac SN to access the support and once you are connected they check accessories for you directly. They confirmed that this was a genuine product and that if it is bought from the 'apple store' with amazon as the seller then it would be fine. Top row of keys works on our mac running Big Sur but not Catalina and apple support suggest that is the problem. We will upgrade and update. 4 stars because it should technically be compatible and we were hoping to just plug and play. Turned out to be a bit of a faff.

I already have a magic keyboard, which came with my iMac in 2018, and I wanted to use it with my iPad pro. This was a recent epiphany and today I thought I would try it. However, I quickly discovered that you can’t just connect the keyboard to another device, it has to be unpaired from its current device and then paired to another! What a pfaff that was and I knew wasn’t going to work for me. Ok, i’ll get a new one and use the old one for the iPad and the new one on the Mac. This was the best price I could find for a new one, so I bought it. Same day delivery, perfect.
Rookie mistake, I didn’t read the reviews and some were saying that this wasn’t a ‘Genuine Apple product’. It arrived before time, set it up, I didn’t even have to use the cable. It’s identical to the one I already have and the packaging was spot on. Connecting it couldn’t have been easier. I unpaired the old one ( in settings clicked on Bluetooth then removed the old one from the list) switched on the new one and the iMac recognised it immediately. I clicked on connect, job done.
The long and short of it? If this isn’t a genuine Apple product… Steve Jobs founded Microsoft and no one’s heard of Mark Zuckerberg!

It's quite expensive for what you get - but then that's the whole Apple story for you. I expected the experience to be similar to my MacBook Pro, but I think the MacBook Pro keyboard is actually better. In hindsight, I should have looked into a compact mechanical keyboards (though a quick Google search later showed them to be extremely ugly for Macs). Also, I personally find the up-arrow key placement a bit difficult to hit, and I end up pressing SHIFT instead.
All in all, it's not bad, it's also not great...

The positive outway the negatives by some way. Watch out for that negative - it’s a keyboard killer.

Positives:
Very easy to type
Great Battery life (built in)
USB charging
Very compact
Well designed and built

Negatives:
Useless with water - do not attempt even wiping with a damp cloth

The keyboard box was not wrapped in the usual Apple cellophane which made me a bit suspicious. This was confirmed when the keyboard came up in Bluetooth with somebody's name on it. I bought it as a new keyboard, British English. It was a second-hand Spanish keyboard. Will not be buying through this route again but will take this up with Amazon and Trading Standards.

The new model Magic Keyboard is terrific. The key travel is less than on the previous version: which makes typing so much easier and quicker. The keyboard has the precise feel of the keys on the MacBook Pro. All shortcuts and keys work as intended and are a perfect fit for use with the iPad Pro. Finally, please ignore some of the other comments that these are not Apple products. Mine sure is. It arrived sealed in the Apple boxing and its easy to confirm with the model/serial number. Highly recommend.

In response to some buyers saying this doesn't work properly, and is counterfeit because of a serial number check...

...can't speak for you all, but I've just bought this, connected it easily and without issue (as simple as turning it on) to a 2020 MacBook Air M1, and ALL THE KEYS WORK.

It's taken a little bit of getting used to, because I've been using one of the earlier 2012 wireless keyboards for ten years, and the key travel is ever so slightly different. But after a few days of use, I'm noticing it's more comfortable, I'm able to type faster, and it's a good deal quieter than the earlier model. Time will tell whether the built-in battery lasts longer than the previous removable AAs.

Perfect apart from one small annoyance

I’ve used a Magic keyboard for years, and after my last one died I was happy to buy another. Really great keyboard, love typing on it, no problems connecting via Bluetooth and staying connected.

The only small annoyance is the ‘lock’ button positioned top right, directly above the backspace key. The number of times I’ve intended to hit backspace but hit lock instead and immediately ended up back on the lock screen just isn’t funny.
